What to Expect on the First Visit

Pelvic floor physical therapy is not commonly spoken of so the most anxious part of the entire treatment is the phone call to schedule and coming in for the initial evaluation. Once you have mustered enough courage to call the PT office where you were referred to you are then unsure and embarrassed what to say when the receptionist asks you the dreaded question, What are we seeing you for?

After you have managed to mumble, what you hope is audible to the receptionist, Therapy for my vagina. You sigh a breath of relief as the receptionist ensures you that, You are in the right place for that. Your first visit is like any other physical therapy evaluation.

There is paperwork you will need to fill out. (See list below) The therapist will then get a detailed history from you. The therapist will then do an external assessment of your low back, your pelvis, and abdomen.

Depending on how much time is left in the first visit you and the therapist will decide if an internal exam will be performed. The reason for the internal exam is because the therapist needs to assess the coordination of the muscles, strength, relaxation if there is pain, and scar mobility. The internal exam is similar to a gynecological visit. I use a gloved finger and place it inside the vaginal canal. I then feel along with the muscles for any obliquities. I will then have the patient perform contractions of the muscle and bearing down to demonstrate relaxation. It is from all of this information that I will put together a treatment plan tailored specifically to you and your needs.
